German VAT number and tax office: your authorised recipient

If you are based outside the EU and EEA and deal with a German tax office, you must name an authorised recipient in Germany when that office asks you to (§ 123 AO). Online sellers on marketplaces must do so without being asked, with their application for VAT registration (§ 22f UStG). You can name PortoDoc – from the EU and the EEA voluntarily too.

A notice sent by post is deemed delivered on the fourth day after posting to an address in Germany, or after one month abroad, unless it arrives later or not at all (§ 122 (2) AO). Deadlines run from then; in case of doubt the tax office has to prove it.
